Jogimatti Trek

OOty of Karnataka

Overview

A green patch of forest situated at 3400m above sea level, in the rocky region of Chitradurga - Popularly known as a 7 hill fort in history is a place called Jogimatti. Amidst prevailing heat wave and perennial drought, the green cover prevailing at the edge of the city has created a climate that resembles Ooty. Hence, the region is also called as ‘OOty of Central Karnataka’. Presence of heavy breeze, misty mountains and greenery are attracting the people from far away places. It is very clear that the forest got its name from a saint called ‘Jogi’, who was known for his social services, and a natural cave that houses a Shiva Linga and idols of Veerbhadra and Basavanna. Jogimatti is home for rare animals, including leopards and sloth bear that are on the verge of extinction, and the plants with medicinal value. The town is also named after the Pandavas because of their brief stay in this region. Mountain is in the form of a Shiva ling and a spring flows from top of Hill , referred as Ganga and hence place gets the name ShivaGanga. The place is known as Dakshina Kashi and a Hindu pilgrimage center.

From Bangalore and being well connected by road makes it an ideal tourist attraction. It is said that the hills looks like a ‘Shiva Linga’ when seen from one of the sides. Also it is said that the spring water found here is from the sacred water of ‘Ganga’. Cave temples of Gavi Gangadhareshwara , Gavi Honnadevi , Gavi Veerabhadreshwara , Patala Gange , Olakallu Punyatheertha can found in the hillock .

From the religious point of view there are several temples and holy locations like ‘Patalagange’, Monolithic Nandi in Shivagange. Shiva ganga hills is also known as Kashi of the South. A surprising phenomenon of Ghee when offered on Shivalinga turning back to butter may be witnessed here - which could be due to temperature difference. The ornate pillars & carvings gave us glimpses of Hoysala architecture. Most of the place is rocky, with railings to hold on to as you climb, and monkeys to make sure you don’t take any offerings to the deity on top.

Inside some of the rocks and even inside the temple and the deities and sannidhis, you could find some small fountains or water bodies, that never dry up throughout the year. But the most intriguing of all was a tunnel which supposedly led into the heart of Bangalore.

With sun beating tiredness takes its toll. But the spirit motivates one to reach the hill top. The cool breeze and very sight of Basavanna / Nandi Idol soothes the tired nerves. A scenic view of Shivangage & surrounding villages stretch is a pleasureful experience. There are 2 temples on top dedicated to Veerabhadreshwara & Gangadhareshwara . Besides is the spot known as Shanthala Drop , where queen of Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana during 12th century had committed suicide by jumping from top of hill.
